Before you enter any personal details, please make sure that you are using our secure online registration system and check that “British Council” is spelt correctly.
You can register for IELTS quickly and easily through our Online Registration Service.
To register, simply follow the steps below:
1. Read the information for candidates
Download and read the Information for Candidates (PDF 934 KB) which contains important information about the test format, the question types and the test results. Please note that IELTS is not recommended for candidates under the age of 16.
2. Decide which version of the test is right for you
There are two versions of the IELTS test:

3. Check the IELTS test dates
There are a limited number of places for all our IELTS test sessions. To make sure you get a place, we recommend that you register two months before your chosen test date. Of course, places may be available after this date. You can use our Online Registration System to find up-to-date information about test dates and availability.
Please note: Your Listening, Reading and Writing test will be completed on the same day. Your Speaking test may be offered on the same day, or up to a week before or after your main test day. You will receive notification in advance if your Speaking test is on a different day to your main test day. Please let us know by email if you are unable to make it on a certain day. You must notify us BEFORE you receive your schedule/notification.
4. Register online
Please ensure you are able to provide the documents in step 5 and are able to pay using one of the payment methods in step 6.
5. Prepare and send your documents
Please make sure you send us ALL of the following documents when you register for your test:
- A scan of your identification document (passport for non-European citizens, ID card for European citizens)
6. Choose your payment options
- Fee for Belgium: EUR 225 from 01/09/2017 to 31/08/2018.
- Fee for Luxembourg: EUR 230 from 01/09/2017 to 28/02/2018.
- Fee for Luxembourg: EUR 237 from 01/03/2017 to 31/08/2018.
You will receive payment instructions and our bank account details by email after submitting the application online if you chose the pay later option.
7. Complete your registration
Copies of your results
If you would like your results to be sent to universities or other educational institutions, please enter the relevant addresses in the appropriate fields on the online registration form. We can issue a maximum of five copies per student.
8. After you register
After registering you will receive an automatic email with your access codes to the free online course: Road to IELTS.
- We will send you a confirmation email 2 weeks before the test date giving you the start time of your test and the venue address

If you require a modified version of the test please contact us with at least three months' before your test date. This notice period is necessary for the modified test version to be prepared.
If your circumstances require special administrative arrangements to be made, e.g. extra time, you must contact us with at least six weeks' notice. You will need to provide a medical certificate issued within the last two years at the time of registration to the office.
The listening test will be conducted through speakers and NOT through headphones. People with hearing difficulties should contact us with at least 6 weeks notice if they require electronic aid or at least 2 weeks notice if they wish to change seat to one near the speakers.
For cancellations received no later than five weeks before the test date, the test fee will be refunded, less an administration charge of 40 EUR.
To cancel your test date, please download and complete our Request for Refund or Test Day Transfer Form and send it via post or e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org (please note that you must sign the form).
Test day transfers
One change of test date is possible and free of charge if the request is received no later than five weeks before the exam. Please note that the new date must then be within three months of the original date.
To change your test date, please download and complete our Request for Refund or Test Day Transfer Form (see downloads section below) and send it via post or email to email@example.com (please note that you must sign the form).
Illness on the Test Day
If you are ill on the test day we need the originals of the following documents from you within five working days of the test date:
- an original medical certificate covering the test date
- a completed Request for Refund or Test Day Transfer Form (see downloads section below).
If we have not received both the required documentation by the fifth working day after the test, you will be marked as absent and forfeit all claims. You can send the scanned copies by email, but the originals must be sent by post.
If both documents reach us within the deadline, you have two options:
- a full refund of the test fee, less an administration charge of 40 EUR
- a single transfer to a new test date (within three months of the original test date)
Candidates who receive a transfer to a new test date (either before the test or due to illness) and who are ill on the second test date are not entitled to a refund of the test fee nor to any further transfer to a new test date.
Please note that refunds can take 4 to 6 weeks to process.
