Aptis for Tourism is a test of English language skills for the tourism and Ho.Re.Ca. industry.

If you are working in or studying for a career in tourism and hospitality, Aptis for Tourism is the test that proves you have the right English language skills needed to excel in the industry.

Aptis for Tourism reflects situations that tourism graduates and professionals encounter every day and tests the effective use of the English language in all four skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking – within their professional settings.

The test is a powerful tool for all professionals to assess their use of language when interacting with customers at hotels, conferences and tourism agencies, as well as in public transport organisations and the food and beverage industry.

There is no pass or fail in Aptis for Tourism.

Format of the test

Aptis for Tourism tests all four language skills:

  • reading
  • listening
  • writing
  • speaking

alongside core grammar and vocabulary.

It is a computer-based test that has an interactive and innovative approach using situations from the hospitality sector.

How to prepare

Visit our Taking the Aptis Test page, where you'll find helpful videos and demonstration tests from the 'General' version of the Aptis test that will help you familiarise yourself with the format of the exam overall.

Scoring and results

The reading, listening, grammar and vocabulary components are scored automatically by computer. Speaking and writing are scored by certified British Council examiners.

Three weeks after the test, you will receive a British Council Certificate as well as a Candidate Report Form with both a score (0–50) and a corresponding CEFR level for each skill, as well as an overall score.

Aptis for Tourism is only available through the British Council. We invigilate all tests to ensure the reliability of the results for any possible usage.
